Starting next Monday, April 29, the afternoon youth program “Adventure Strip” brings us “Superboy”, a youthful television adaptation of the popular comic book hero previously portrayed in film by Christopher Reeve. This time, the teenage Superman is played by the relatively unknown Gerard Christopher. The series consists of 52 half-hour episodes and was produced by Alexander and Ilya Salkind, the same team behind the Superman films (I, II, and III).

This television version of Superman follows the adventures of a 19-year-old superhero who, under the alias Clark Kent, studies journalism at Shuster University. Although his powers are not yet fully developed, Kent transforms into Superboy to fight for truth, justice, and the American way, battling evil and villains. As expected, young Clark has a friend, Lana Lang (as in the films), also a student, who is enrolled in a police department program.

This leads her into dangerous street situations, from which she emerges victorious with the invaluable help of Superboy. The recurring villain remains Lex Luthor, reimagined here as a senior student at the same university.

Superboy is the second Superman series produced for American television. The first was portrayed by William Katt in The Greatest American Hero, where a young teacher gained supernatural powers after a chance encounter with extraterrestrials. That series ceased airing on TVE four years ago.
